Sand Hill Road Project To Enter Final Phase, Expect Delays

A gas line replacement project on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, California will enter its final phase this June and alter the way travelers can use the road.

“With a project of this magnitude on Sand Hill Road, we anticipate extreme delays and ask motorists and bicyclists to plan accordingly,” said Chip Taylor, Public Works Director for the City of Menlo Park.

Crews will begin resurfacing the road over the new gas line on June 24 and continue through the 28th, according to Jason King, Pacific Gas & Electric Company spokesman.

PG&E contractors will start grinding two inches off the surface of the road at 9 p.m. and work through 6 a.m.

At 9 a.m. on the 25th, crews will start repaving the road with rubberized asphalt, which was chosen because of its noise carrying properties, King said. Its composition is designed to reduce the amount of noise that emanates from the road into the nearby neighborhoods, he said. They will work through 4:30 p.m., if all goes as planned.

Lane use will be restricted while roadwork is being done. Westbound lanes will be shifted to the eastbound side of the road, while crews are working on the westbound lane, and vice versa. Someone will be there to guide traffic, King said.

A single bike lane will be open the entire time.

The project to install an upgraded gas pipeline began in August 2012, prompted by a deadly pipeline explosion in San Bruno, California. The new pipeline in Menlo Park will have a valve to control the flow of gas that can be controlled remotely in the event of an emergency, according to PG&E.

City officials originally expected this project to conclude in October 2012. The new estimated date of completion is Saturday June 29, 2013.
