Jim Clifford retired in 2000 after a 40-year career in wire service journalism, a span split between UPI and AP. He was AP's Northern California broadcast editor when he retired. His professional honors include the UPI Broadcast Excellence Award. He was honored by the San Francisco Press Club in the 1970s for a series on the ethnic history of California. He is the author of "Philip's Code: No News is Good News - to a Killer." Clifford was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from San Francisco State where he met his future wife, Peggy. They moved to Redwood City and raised seven children. He is a veteran of the Navy and Air Force. He is active in local history organizations.
