One important thing to remember is that our Labor Day was specifically designated in the US as a…Read More September celebration instead of on May Day by President Grover Cleveland to try and disconnect the labor struggle from its activist and leftist roots:
May Day was an observance to commemorate the Haymarket massacre where striking union workers were killed by police and some others were wrongly put on trial (and then put to death) for allegedly throwing a bomb during the demonstration. Six years after the trial the sitting governor of Illinois pardoned the remaining men awaiting trial/sentencing who were lucky enough to still be alive, and he criticized the trial as well.
I think this disconnect between Labor Day and May Day is why a lot of people in the US have a very limited understanding of what May Day is and see it as only a retail holiday or an abstract, meaningless marker on the calendar. I certainly never learned about the holiday at any length in school, and only learned about its true origins as an adult.
