Menlo Freshman Wins WBAL Cross-country Title

The game at Crystal Springs in Belmont was fruitful.

The Menlo School cross country team took the West Bay Athletic League championships by storm, taking a league title and several top 10 finishes, Thursday at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

Menlo girls went 1-2 in their race with freshman Zoe Enright winning the girls’ championship and sophomore Lizzie Lacy took second. Senior Andrew Schmitt placed fifth in the boys’ race and junior Matt Myers grabbed sixth. Both teams took fourth place in the championship race and advance to the CCS Div IV championship. In the league standings, the boys finished third while the girls placed fourth.

Both teams will race at Toro Park in Salinas on Nov. 10 with the boys’ start at 11:10 a.m. and the girls’ start at 11:45 a.m.

Enright set a freshman record for the championships, covering the on the 2.95-mile course  in 19 minutes , 5.1 seconds, beating the previous freshman best of 19:11.1 set last season by Woodside Priory’s Gillian Belton. Lacy crossed the line in 19:15.9 nearly 10 seconds ahead of the third-place winner.

Sophomore Brooke Hammarskjold in 21:28.9, freshman Lilja Gudmindsdottir (21:57.9) and sophomore Lexi Van Ligten (22:59.6) rounded out the scoring for the Knights.

In the boys’ race, Schmitt took fifth in 16:47.4 and Myers finished sixth in 16:49.7 to lead Menlo. Dennis Mandudzo was the top freshman boys’ finisher in the varsity race, placing 16th in 17:24.3. Senior Michael Machlin clocked in at 17:32.7 and freshman Matt Joss finished in 17:57.8.

Sasha Cassidy and Nikky Price placed second and third to give the frosh-soph girls the league championship victory.
