Menlo Baseball Opens Lions Club Tournament With Rout

Avis shines at plate, on mound.

Non-league baseball: Menlo 17, Santa Clara 2

In an opening-round game of the Cupertino Lions Club Tournament, Menlo School baseball pounded Santa Clara 17-2 behind the stellar performance of senior Freddy Avis both on the mound and at the plate Monday at Washington Park.

With more than 20 Major League Baseball scouts on hand to see the Stanford signee, Avis led off the game with a towering home run, then threw five innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and stuck out 10.

The Knights’ Adam Greenstein had a big day at the plate with four hits and three RBIs against the Bruins (2-12-2).

Menlo (8-4) returns to action tonight against Monterey in another Lions Club pool play game in a battle between the defending CCS Div. II and Div. III champions at PAL Stadum in San Jose.
