Menlo Baseball Edges Los Gatos in Lions Club Tournament

Greenstein drives in winner.

The Menlo baseball team returned to the site of its Central Coast Section Div. III championship victory and emerged victorious again. In a dual of defending CCS Div. II and Div. III champions, Menlo pulled out a thrilling 6-5 victory over Monterey in the second round of the Cupertino Lions Club Tournament on Tuesday night at PAL Stadium.

Menlo (9-4) advances to the championship game at 7 p.m. Friday night against the winner of Thursday’s game between Mitty and Carlmont.

Adam Greenstein’s no-out single with runners on first and third won the game for Menlo in the bottom of the seventh. Mikey Diekroeger had reached on an error and advanced to third, and a sac bunt by senior Dylan Mayer that was thrown away at first left it up to Greenstein.

The Knights had jumped out to an early lead behind the hitting of senior Freddy Avis, who singled in the first, then hit a solo home run in the third. Avis has homered in each of his last three games.

Junior lefthander Jack Redman came on in relief of starter Austin Marcus in the fifth, and was outstanding, allowing one walk in 2 2/3 innings to pick up his first varsity victory. Monterey is 10-6.
