Wilson, Menlo-Atherton Wrestlers Ready for CCS Tournament

Menlo-Atherton girls' basketball among local teams to win CCS opening round games.

The Menlo-Atherton High wrestling team will be represented by five of its members when the Central Coast Section tournament begins at 10 a.m. Friday at Independence High School in San Jose.

Austin Wilson, the Peninsula Athletic League champion at 128 pounds, has the best chance to qualify for the state meet from M-A. He is not seeded for the CCS tournament, though after pinning three opponents in the PAL tournament, he cannot be overlooked.

Also representing the Bears are Sam Stroud, second in the PAL tournament at 154 pounds, third-pace finishers James Smith (162), Donald “Buster" LaHaye (172), Josh Buttrzam (195) and Hector Santana (fourth, 147 pounds).

M-A’s Temuulen Bat-Enkh, the top seed at 134 pounds, was knocked out of the tournament in his first bout after suffering a concussion. He won the match.

On the junior varsity level, Edward “Bingo” LaHaye finished third and Max Saunderby second in their divisions.

Wilson pinned El Camino High’s Mark Formalejo in 1:58 to claim the title. Stroud dropped an 8-4 decision to Terra Nova’s Aaron Williams in their title match.

Half Moon Bay High had five PAL champions in Joseph Lowman, who defended his title at 174 pounds, 122-pounder Spencer Boling, Neal Seaton at 197 pounds, Marcos Sarabia (222) and Jose Ayon (287).

South San Francisco’s Arthur Georgiyev won the 182-pound title and is the top seed in the weight class for the CCS tournament. Lowman is seeded second in his weight division.

Terra Nova’s Abdallah Mahmoud won the 162-pound title and is seeded sixth in the CCS tournament. El Camino High’s Marion Diokno (106) and Christian Diokno (113) also won titles and earned seeds.

Serra High, the West Catholic Athletic League champions, has several seeded wrestlers in the CCS tournament, including Luis Alvarez (fifth, 106 pounds), Elias Hernandez (second, 113), Jerry Delarosa (third, 132), Phillip Becerra (sixth, 152), and Chad Thodus (sixth, 182).
