This Ain’t MTV: M-A Seniors Spill the Reality of Teen Parenting

At a national conference, Menlo-Atherton High School seniors present their digital documentaries of the joys and challenges of raising children.

Move over, MTV’s “Teen Mom.” Two Menlo-Atherton High School seniors are in San Francisco today through Tuesday presenting their documentaries about the true realities of teen parenting.

Erendira Parra and Nimsi Garcia collaborated with Teen Talk Sexuality Education, a local adolescent sexual health organization, Teen Talk Sexuality, to create the documentaries that followed teen moms in the community. The documentaries, made through the school filmmaking program, New Voices for Youth, are being shown for the first time at the YTH Live 2013 (youth + tech + health) conference from April 7 to 9.

“This is an exceptional opportunity for these young women to describe their personal experiences with teen parenthood and sexual decision-making with providers who can have a direct impact on teens’ sexual health choices,” said Abigail Karlin-Resnick, Teen Talk’s executive director, in a statement.

YTH Live 2013 is an annual conference that brings health and technology professionals together with youth, parents and community leaders to advance the sexual health of youth in the U.S. and abroad. The conference is expected to have 600 national and international in-person attendees, according to Teen Talk.

Teen Talk’s Parent Panel will moderate a panel discussion at the conference focusing on the realities of teen parenthood in contrast to the media portrayal in shows like MTV’s “Teen Mom.”
