Report Card: Menlo Park Schools Graded

Academic Performance Indicator scores released for 2011. Patch brings home scores for all the public schools in Menlo Park and Atherton.

Every year, thousands of children in California have to take Standardized Testing And Reporting tests, so the state can evaluate how well the school is performing.

The California Department of Education uses scores from the STAR tests to assign each school an Academic Performance Indicator score (API).

It is a number from 200 to 1,000 that represents the quality of eduation for an entire school.

Patch researched these scores to share them with you.

First, a bit of background that will help you understand the information you're about to view:

API Target: If a school’s API score falls below the state’s minimum target score, which in California is 800, the state will set a goal target for the following year of last year’s score, plus 5 points. If a school’s 2012 target is ‘A,’ that means the school is already scoring at or above the state’s minimum target, and therefore does not have a growth target other than to remain at or above 800.

Statewide Rank: This is how a school ranks within a grouping of schools equaling 10 percent of schools statewide of a similar type, with 1 the lowest and 10 the highest. Consideration is given to socioeconomic factors, the number of English learners enrolled at the school, class size, number of credentialed teachers and many other factors.
