With five and a half days remaining in the election season, the San Mateo County Elections office is hard at work counting vote-by-mail ballots.
Meaghan Hassel-Shearer, county elections specialist, had recorded 78,715 ballots on the eve of Oct 31st .
Last year on this day, the county had received about 30,000 mail-in ballots.
About 55 percent of voters in San Mateo County regularly vote by mail. This amounts to about 192,955 voters, according to Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, who is encouraging people to come watch the process.
“This is a very exciting time to visit,” Church said. “Right now, nearly every functional team responsible for election administration is fully engaged,” he said.
The Elections office started tallying ballots on October 26. It will continue to do so through November. To arrange for a visit, call Narda Barrientos, Elections Supervisor, by phone at (650) 312-5222 or by e-mail her at nbarrientos@smcare.org.
