Atherton City Council Race Reboots

Atherton residents are starting to complete the paperwork required to run for Jerry Carlson's empty seat on City Council. Find out who wants the seat in this post.

Update: 11:57 a.m. on Wednesday

Diane Sandhu has collected paperwork to start obtaining signatures that will nominate her for a seat on Atherton City Council, said Theresa Della Santa, city clerk of Atherton.

Original post from Tuesday afternoon:

Greg Conlon obtained paperwork to begin a run for a seat on Atherton City Council on Tuesday, according to Theresa DellaSanta, city clerk of Atherton.

The Atherton resident is one of seven people who expressed interest in the seat vacated by Councilmember Jerry Carlson, who resigned.  Jo-Ann Byrne Sockolov, Greg Conlon, Rick DeGolia, Michael Lempres, John Ruggeiro, Diane Sandhu, and Michael Stogner applied for the position earlier this month when the option to be appointed was on the table.

City Councilmembers met during a special session on July 11 to determine which of these candidates they would appoint to fill Carlson's former role.  Six people attended that meeting to interview for the position. Diane Sandhu was absent from the proceedings.

After three rounds of voting, a decision could not be made, leaving Carlson’s old seat available. Atherton residents will be asked to determine who is most qualified for the job in the November 2013 election.

The candidate nomination period opened on July 15, 2013.

Rick DeGolia and John Ruggeiro retrieved paperwork to begin their campaigns to run for City Council from the city clerk’s office earlier this month.

San Mateo County elections office staff confirmed that Rick DeGolia is officially in the race, with all signatures on his nomination paperwork qualified and verified.
