Redistricting Commission Postpones Release of Political District Maps

Additional comments on the first draft of political district boundaries sought.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission is asking people to comment on maps of proposed political district boundaries, one of which divides Menlo Park into two congressional districts.

Now that the 2010 U.S. Census has concluded, the commissioners are tasked with redrawing the lines that separate political districts to "preserve communities of interest," while shifting them to account for population growth, according to wedrawthelines.ca.gov.

The release of the second draft of the maps was postponed to July 28, instead of July 14 as was originally announced. Commmissioners will meet with the technical team that creates the maps tomorrow to discuss the feedback they have received on the first drafts of the boundary maps.

You can find the visualizations of the boundaries here. Equivalency files, shapefiles and Google Earth map layers are also available at wedrawthelines.ca.gov.

Interested parties can send feedback about them via email to votersfirstact@crc.ca.gov or by fax at (916) 651-5711.

The vote to adopt the second draft of the maps is scheduled to take place on August 28.
