New Bill Could Require Gun Owners to Have Liability Insurance

Two State Assemblyman argue if car owners are required to own it, so should gun owners.

State Assemblymen Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) and Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) introduced legislation Tuesday that would require gun owners to purchase liability insurance.

Assembly Bill 231 would require the owners to cover damages incurred from incidents stemming from their firearms.

"The government requires insurance as a condition of operating a car - at the very least we should impose a similar requirement for owning a firearm," Ting said in a statement.

Gomez said, under the legislation, individuals would receive a more affordable policy if they use a trigger lock for their firearms and take part in training courses.

Ting on Tuesday also introduced Assembly Bill 232, which would provide state income tax credits for people who participate in local gun buyback programs, with a cap of $1,000.

"Gun buyback programs are an effective way to reduce the number of guns in circulation, and lower the risk of intentional or accidental damage by these weapons," Ting said.

Bad comparison! You don't have to pay for car insurance to own one, just to use one on the streets...

Will the Government buy insurance? How about Ting and Gomez give tax credits to the the law abiding taxpayers who have saved lives with their gun. The FBI should be able to get them the names and list for this.

How about offering a stimulus program to encourage gun owners to update their security systems and to purchase appropriate gun safes. I for one would go out and buy a larger safe if their was a rebate program for trading in my old one and upgrading to a larger, more secure model.

This is a blatant attack by imperialist elites that want to disarm the population to prevent and reduce any potential revolt or protest against a dictator government... people... read your history....The right to bear arms was to check to an out of control president and government. We can take it back by force if called upon. I am ready to stand against this government. What constitution says Hussein Obama, no wonder he was a constitutional lawyer. So he can tear it apart! If these people are allowed to infringe the Second Amendment you won’t get it back without blood.

The survey, which was conducted in early March 2013, received 15,000 responses from law enforcement professionals. It found that the overall attitude of law enforcement is strongly anti-gun legislation and pro-gun rights, with the belief that an armed citizenry is effective in stopping crime. Response percentages varied only slightly when analyzed by rank and department size. http://www.policeone.com/corporate-profile/press-releases/6188461-PoliceOne-com-Releases-Survey-of-15-000-Law-Enforcement-Professionals-about-U-S-Gun-Control-Policies/
