In a unique move among his colleagues, Guillermo "Memo" Morantes announced he would not seek re-election this year for the San Mateo County Board of Education.
His seat, Area 7, which includes Portola Valley, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, and parts of Redwood City, will be the only open seat on the seven-member board.
Incumbents Rod Hsiao, Jim Cannon and Ted Lampert are seeking re-election. Three other seats are not up for election in this cycle.
Morantes is endorsing Jo-Ann Sockolov, Executive Director of the Redwood City Education Foundation, to replace him.
“She brings a definite knowledge of the diverse communities Redwood City has,” Morantes told the Palo Alto Daily News.
Sockolov will face Joe Ross, a former Naval officer and technology exeutive who currently serves as the Executive Director for California Citizens Schools.
Ross’s campaign website describes his priorities as increasing budget transparency, engaging the business community, and increasing the number of students heading to college.
