Menlo Park City Council Lauds Sierra Club's Leadership

Menlo Park City Council lauded the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club Tuesday for leading the community on initiatives that improve the environment.

Vice Mayor Raymond Mueller read a proclamation in front of City Council that celebrated the Sierra Club’s 80th birthday and recognized individual members who had made a positive difference in Menlo Park.  The ones who attended the meeting were asked to stand in front of the people gathered in council chambers.

Many of the members who stood in front of the council that night were integral in paving a foundation for projects that promote sustainable solutions to environmental problems, Mueller said.

The Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club has members that live in cities throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara County.

Mueller highlighted some of the most outstanding members, which included Menlo Park resident Adina Levin who was described as “one of the most effective advocates in Menlo Park,”

“From working to improve the bicycle accommodations by Facebook to founding Friends of Caltrain, The Sierra Club feels lucky to have such a strong environmental advocate in Menlo Park,” Mueller said.

Levin is also a former member of the Menlo Park Green Ribbon Citizen Committee.

Other community members praised for their work in Menlo Park included former mayor Chuck Kinney, who has planted hundreds of trees within city borders.

Heyward Robinson and Kelly Fergusson were commended for their roles in creating the Green Ribbon Citizens Committee during their time on the City Council. Both are also former mayors of Menlo Park.

The Loma Prieta Club was the third chapter of the Sierra Club when it was founded in 1933 and now has more than 16,000 members.
