PG&E Takes a Pounding from Feds

Year-long investigation points to pattern of sub-par practices; cost of overhaul expected to run into the billions.

Federal officials today blamed a deadly pipeline explosion last September solely on PG&E and made recommendations that could have a far-reaching impact on the the entire industry.

In a hearing that capped an almost year-long investigation into the San Bruno disaster, National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Deborah Hersman lambasted the utility giant, setting the stage for the safety board’s final report, which was expected to be released later in the day.

“Today, you will hear troubling revelations about a company that exploited weaknesses in a lax system of oversight, and government agencies that placed blind trust in operators to the detriment of public safety,” Hersman said.
