Bike Project To Cause Extreme Delays in Menlo Park

The City's Public Works Department divulges details.

Crews begin work Monday on a project that will close the gap in the bike lane on Alpine Road near the Stanford Golf Course, and cause major traffic delays.

“There’s a 250 foot section where the road isn’t wide enough for class 2 bike lanes, so the plan is to widen the road and install new curbing to match the rest of the road,” Rich Angulo said, as he pitched the project to regional transportation officials in March 2011.

The project began after a fatal accident on Alpine Road and 280 in 2010. Menlo Park city staffers sought ways to make it safer for cyclists while money was available to fund such initiatives. On October, 23, 2012 Menlo Park’s City Council approved allocating funds for this endeavor, which is expected to cost the city $202,000.

The project will be done in phases.

Crews will start removing old asphalt and replacing it on April 1, a process that will impact motorists and cyclists who use the route.

“This project will cause extreme delays,” said Ruben Niño, Assistant Public Works Director at City of Menlo Park.

Niño advises bicyclists and motorists to share the road, or plan to take alternate routes during grinding and paving operations.

Electronic message boards will be placed nearby to warn travelers of road conditions.
