Atherton To Revamp Bike Routes

City Council authorized spending about $40K to improve the routes cyclists take through town.

The City of Atherton plans to improve the main bike routes through town by going to the drawing board and drafting a new master plan. City officials are not planning to do it alone.

Atherton City Council voted to release $39,980 to the City Manager on February 20 for the purpose of hiring Alta Planning & Design, a Berkeley-based firm that specializes in crafting transportation plans. The company will likely take the helm of the plan creation process, guiding city officials every step of the way. Alta is expected to produce feasibility and traffic studies, forecast cost estimates, and coordinate many elements of the plan's design.

In 2010, Alta's planners and engineers worked with the city of Menlo Park to design a pedestrian and bicycle plan that addresses some of the community’s needs.

Atherton Mayor Elizabeth Lewis will be appointing people from Atherton, and other stakeholders, to an advisory group that will identify her community’s needs and wants.

When the members are confirmed, the newly formed Pedestrian/Bike Stakeholder Advisory Group will tour the town with Alta's planners and engineers.

Subsequently, they will compile a list of requests and author an assessment of local conditions for cycling. They will then compare their perspectives to the contents of the draft master bike plan and identify opportunities for improvement.

The P/BSAG is expected to meet three times in the next seven months, according to Teresa DellaSanta, city clerk for the city of Atherton.
