The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has expanded its reach over the past few years. In light of this outward expansion, Sheriff Greg Munks is looking to develop an organizational structure best equipped to support the recent growth within our Office. This growth was a result of municipal law enforcement contracts and other critical projects such as the new Maple Street Correctional Center, and the Coyote Point Range Project, while maintaining a strategic vision towards other future opportunities.
A key component of this plan also included the creation of a second Assistant Sheriff position. One Assistant Sheriff will oversee Corrections, Court Services, Jail Planning and Technology Services. The other Assistant Sheriff will oversee the North and South County Patrol Bureaus, NCRIC/HIDTA, Homeland Security/Office of Emergency Services, as well as the Narcotics and Vehicle Theft Task Forces. The two Assistant Sheriff positions, Administrative and Finance Director, Crime Laboratory Director, as well as the Professional Standards Bureau Lieutenant will all report directly to the Undersheriff.
With the above in mind, Sheriff Munks wanted to reintroduce a familiar name from within the Sheriff’s Office organization. As of this morning, with the approval of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, Captain Tom Gallagher was appointed as the second Assistant Sheriff for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office’s Executive Team.
Assistant Sheriff Gallagher is a San Mateo County native and a Serra High School graduate. He has been with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office since 1987 and held assignments in all areas of the organization including Corrections, Patrol, and Investigations. He has risen up through the ranks from supervisory, management, and executive positions. He possesses a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Union Institute and University and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Leadership Program.
