Mountain Lion Spotted Near Canada College

The big cat was last seen heading into the rural area near Edgewood Park trail.

A mountain lion was reported roaming an area close to Canada College in Redwood City at about 6:00 p.m. Sunday, according to the SMC Alert system.

The lion was seen in the vicinity of an unmarked Edgewood Park trail (10 Old Stage Coach Rd.) close to the campus. Once seen, the big cat departed towards the park's rural area.

Authorities say if you see a mountain lion do not approach it, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.

Keep a close watch on small children.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

Pick up small children.
