Police are calling the drowning accidental.

A 9-year-old girl has drowned in a Menlo Park swimming pool, according to police.

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, emergency crews in Menlo Park responded to a report of a juvenile drowning in a pool at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Sharon Park Drive near Sand Hill Road, police said in a statement.

"Emergency personnel arrived and located the victim near the apartment community pool, unconscious and not breathing," according to the statement. "Medical personnel immediately began life saving efforts administering CPR to the victim."

The girl, whose identity was not yet released, was taken to Stanford Medical Center, where the hospital's medical staff continued CPR in an attempt to resuscitate her, police said.

"Despite all efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased by the attending physician," the statement said.

The initial police investigation shows that the girl drowned accidentally, however an investigation into the incident is continuing.
