Deputies Search for Suspected Jewel Thieves

Two men attempted to rob a jewelry story in unincorporated Menlo Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Two attempted jewel thieves were at large near Marsh and Bay Roads Wednesday afternoon, said the San Mateo County Sheriff's office.  

The men attempted to rob the Plaza Jewelers store at Middlefield Road and Eighth street at about 12:30 p.m., according to Rebecca Rosenblatt, San Mateo County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson.  Police were alerted. 

When county law enforcement officials arrived, the men fled in a white sedan. Witnesses said four dark-skinned men were in the get-away vehicle. Five county deputies pursued them on a chase through Fair Oaks and into Menlo Park.  A helicopter squad was called in to assist them.

The car crashed into another vehicle at Bay and Marsh roads. The occupants of that vehicle were not hurt.  

Two of the men involved in the attempted robberty are in custody, according to Rosenblatt. Redwood City, Menlo Park, and Atherton Police assisted them. The handgun used in the attempted robbery was confiscated. 

At about 4:30 p.m., the search of the area concluded and the scene was cleared, according to Rosenblatt.  Two of the men remain on the loose; Rosenblatt said the investigation is ongoing.
