CHP To Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint This Weekend

Officers aggressively seeking drunk drivers.

The Redwood City Area Office of the California Highway Patrol announced Friday that it will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday, April 21.

“Every year, members of our community are injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers,” said CHP Spokesperson Art Montiel.

“It is the Department’s goal to use this enforcement tool to assist with the reduction of injury and fatal collisions that are caused by drunk drivers,” he added.

The checkpoint will be from 8 p.m.- midnight at an undisclosed location.

It's too bad they announce the dates. This allows drivers who think its ok to drink and endanger others lives to stay off the streets the one night the check points are in place. If check points were at random times as well as always undisclosed locations, maybe lives could be saved. Designated drivers should always be used, not just when chp announces dates.

I agree that when groups of friends have drinks, someone sober should be given the keys. Maybe they DO do random ones.
CHP Officer Art Montiel April 24, 2012 at 08:30 PM
The CHP is required by law to notify the media within 48 hours of an upcoming Sobriety Checkpoint and announce the location 2 hours prior to start time. We do not do random sobriety checkpoints, however, we do have roving units every night focusing on drunk drivers in an effort to save lives.

Thanks for clearing that up for us, Art. Are the roving units just tasked with drunk driving prevention? Or are those officers all purpose law enforcement?
CHP Officer Art Montiel April 24, 2012 at 09:56 PM
Most of the time it is regular patrol officers focusing on drunk drivers at night. Sometimes we have a couple units per night where their main focus is to go out and find drunk drivers before they crash and kill themselves or other motorists.
