Bike Thieves Trolling Menlo Park

Menlo Park Police records show five bikes were stolen this weekend.

Multiple bicycles were taken from homes in downtown Menlo Park on Monday, according to Menlo Park Police records.

At about 10 a.m. a resident reported their bike was stolen from the 700 block of Live Oak Avenue through the Menlo Park Police Department’s online crime reporting system. The bike, valued at $500,was locked to a wall inside of a carport.

An hour and a half later, a bike valued at $450 was stolen from a patio in the 700 block of Roble Avenue. The bike was not locked.

It is not clear if the same culprit committed the acts, although their proximity to each other suggests that these were crimes of opportunity, said a Menlo Park Police spokeperson. If it was the same person, they did not stop there.

A few minutes later, another bike and a helmet was lifted from the common area of homes in the 900 block of Alice Lane. The estimated value of these items was $366.  The owner of the bike reported that the bike was secured with a U-lock.

Nearby, a $799 bike was taken from an unlocked garage, where the bike was locked to itself.  The lock was placed through the wheel and the frame.

This crime brings the total of bikes stolen on Monday to four.

Also reported on Monday: A $1,000 bike was taken sometime over the weekend in the 800 block of Fremont Street.  The bike was secured with a U-lock. However, it was inside of an open garage.

52 bikes have been stolen Menlo Park since January 1, 2013.
