Peninsula Volunteers Honors Golden Member

The Menlo Park-based volunteer organization honors Atherton resident Ann Griffiths for her contributions.

Peninsula Volunteers bestowed the 2013 “Jefferson Award” upon Ann Griffiths on Tuesday, publicly commending her for her decades of service to the community.

Griffiths, of Atherton, is an “exemplary community service contributor,” said Mary Young, who nominated her for the award.

Young has worked with Griffiths on many projects throughout the years and considers her a personal friend.

“I had a most difficult time deciding on the most representative person for our organization to be recognized by the Jefferson Award,” said Young, member of the Peninsula Volunteers Board of Directors.

“Although we have many members who are our Golden Circle members of 50+ years of service, Ann is my nominee in that she is still very active and has continuously donated her time,” Young wrote in her award recommendation letter.

Griffiths began working with the organization more than 50 years ago, serving as its president in 1974 and co-chairing the annual Authors Salon organizers board.   Some of her accomplishments during her tenure with the organization include chairing the Rosener House Day Services Center, supporting the organizations' fundraising endeavors, and welcoming new members into the group.

The Peninsula Volunteers Inc. is a non-profit organization that organizes volunteers who help adults and seniors gain access to meals and social activities.

The organization provides 82% of the low-income housing for adults in Menlo Park, according to Young. Its Meals on Wheels Program delivered more than 1,500 meals to homebound adults throughout the Peninsula in March 2013.

Griffiths who was integral to that meal delivery effort was selected for as the 2013 recipient of the award for her longtime commitment to the organization and because she is “tirelessly” committed to furthering the organizations’ mission, said people familiar with the matter.

Volunteers gathered at Little House in Menlo Park on Tuesday for a luncheon in her honor.  Photos the days festivities are being uploaded to this article.
