City of Menlo Park Considers Take Over of Flood Park

Flood Park is now the on City of Menlo Park's agenda.

Our concerns have been heard! Flood Park is on the minds and on the agenda of the Menlo Park City Council. City staff is currently reviewing the feasibility of taking over ownership and management of this wonderful, 21-acre park! Here is a excerpt from the City Council Agenda for May 24, 2011 (pages 23-24):

"Accept ownership of Flood Park – County budget woes have resulted in the County considering options for closure of several County parks, including Flood Park in Menlo Park. The County currently spends approximately $205,000 annually at Flood Park after accounting for the revenue from parking fees and picnic site rentals.

Although staff recommends taking no action on this item until the County has made a final decision, we are moving forward with an evaluation of the current condition of the park’s facilities and infrastructure, including an estimate of the capital investment required to bring the facility up to City standards.

Additional community engagement would be needed to determine other aspects of a plan to take on the Park, including: What are the community’s unmet recreation and park needs that could be accommodated in the Park and what capital investment would be required to meet those needs? Can a workable business plan for Flood Park be developed that would minimize the long-term maintenance costs and impacts to the City’s General Fund?

Based on recent meetings with County staff, the County budget proposal may provide for the Park to be kept open for another six months after work on the water pipelines is completed in October. This will allow more time for the City and County to develop a transition plan and make final decisions about whether ownership of the Park should be transferred."
