Transportation Agency Discovering Why Teens Are Putting Off Driving

The San Mateo County Mobility Survey is attempting taking a deep look at changes in teen driving behaviors and how that is affecting public transportation use.

San Mateo County is conducting a survey of teen drivers to better understand why fewer of them are getting their driver’s license at the age of 16. The survey is part of a research project being conducted by the Mineta Transportation Institute, with support from the San Mateo County Transit District.

The survey (http://bit.ly/175Yor8) invites county residents 15 to 20 years of age to share their perspective on twenty-first century social issues related to technology, obtaining a driver’s license, and using public transit. This on-line survey is available until April 30.

Research indicates there has been a cultural shift, and today’s teens are more likely to delay getting their driver’s license.

wenty-first century challenges shape values and priorities in more dynamic ways than they have in past generations. These changes are attributed to increased costs and restrictions related to driving and owning an automobile, teenagers’  as well as increased education requirements. Other factors include employment responsibilities, household obligations, and advances in technology.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Responses to this survey will help public transportation providers, like SamTrans, better plan and market transit service for young county residents who do not have a driver’s license.
