San Mateo Man Dies at San Carlos Caltrain Station

Southbound trains delayed all morning.

Clyde Jeter Jr., 63, of San Mateo, died this morning at 7:45 a.m. of natural causes at the San Carlos Caltrain station, said Kristine Gamble, senior deputy coroner of San Mateo.

"From a distance I saw the paramedics near the middle of the platform, but hoped someone had just fainted or fell," said resident Jennifer Daly who was waiting for the 7:50 a.m. train to Palo Alto.

"While walking up the ramp I saw the person lying on the platform covered in a yellow sheet, with the paramedics packing up to leave.  Honestly, it was a pretty awful sight, nothing gruesome or gory, but not what I want to see in the morning."

The incident initially occurred on the southbound Caltrain, though the actual cause of death is still undetermined. The train stopped at the San Carlos station where the Belmont-San Carlos Fire Department attempted to resuscitate Jeter. The coroner said Jeter died at the station and was immediately taken to the coroner's office.

"The conductor attempted to give the man mouth-to-mouth on the train but it didn't help," said Christine Dunn, spokesperson for Caltrain. "The fire department was waiting for Jeter when the train arrived at the San Carlos Caltrain station just before 8 a.m.

Residents getting ready for work  gathered around and watched as fire fighters and emergency responders tried to revive Jeter.

The morning southbound trains were delayed 23 minutes due to the medical emergency, according to a letter Dunn had sent out.
