Ravenswood City School District Hires New Superintendent

The Ravenswood City School District hired a new superintendent Thursday who will be paid $170,000 per year.

The school district's Board of Trustees approved Gloria Hernandez Ed.D.’s employment contract last night.

Hernandez said she was honored and thankful to have been selected.

“I believe the district will continue to excel amidst the challenges and changes facing public schools in California,” Hernandez said.  “I look forward to leading the team that makes this possible and I commit myself to work tirelessly on behalf of the students and community of East Palo Alto."

Hernandez will replace Maria de la Vega who had been the district's superintendent for the past eight years.

Hernandez was previously the assistant superintendent of the Twin Rivers Unified School District, which is located in McClellan, California. She was responsible for the Curriculum and Instruction Department. Hernandez held that position since 2008, according to Twin Rivers USD employees.  She was educated at California State University, Sacramento, according to her Linkedin profile.

Hernandez will be tasked with managing the nine schools in the district, which are located in Menlo Park and East Palo Alto.

Her contract states she has the “complete freedom to organize, reorganize and arrange the administrative and supervisory staff, including instruction and business affairs, which in her judgment, best serves the school district.” All her decisions are subject to approval by the Ravenswood City School District’s Board of Directors.

Gloria Hernandez Ed.D.’s employment contract starts on July 1, 2013 and will end on June 30, 2016.

She is eligible for a raise on July 1, 2015 and will receive a travel allowance of $350 per month to drive her car to district related activities. Her contract also states she can be reimbursed up to $550 per month for work-related expenses.
