Observing Memorial Day in Menlo Park

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

By Kathleen Reilly

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

For those who prefer something traditional to honor the fallen, place wreaths or flowers at war memorials or grave sites. A good place to buy flags near Menlo Park is Judy’s Flag City & Gift Center at 1340 El Camino Real, Belmont. For flowers, try Cindy’s Flowers & Gifts at 1800 El Camino Real, Menlo Park.

In San Bruno, Golden Gate National Cemetery will hold its 72nd annual Memorial Day observance, “Never to be Forgotten,” starting at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27 at 1300 Sneath Lane. Guest speakers will be Retired Col. Allan Cruz, USMC, and Chief Johnny Johnson, World War II Navy veteran. Before the program the San Andreas Band will perform at 10:30 a.m.

You can also grab your folding chair and flag and attend a parade. On the Peninsula, the town of Hillsborough plans a Memorial Day parade at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27. It will start at Town Hall and follow Florabunda Avenue, ending at the North School Field.

And after the parade?

Time to party! Host a barbecue, or attend a local fair or festival. Or can even partake in a little Memorial Day shopping and take advantage of seasonal sales. Look for local deals at Sharon Heights shopping center, 325 Sharon Park Drive, Menlo Park.

Swimming is a viable option as well. Communities typically open the gates to pools or beaches at the end of May. Dig out your swim gear and a good book and check to see if Menlo Swim and Sport is open for the season. Pack plenty of snacks and have a picnic.

Not tired yet? Grab a chair and a beverage for an evening fireworks display. California’s Great America will kick off an all-new fireworks display, accompanied by patriotic music, at 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26, at 4701 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara.

The event is free with park admission. Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-staff until noon.
