John Gurnee has been appointed the Chef for LB Steak in Menlo Park, California. Immediately prior to this he worked as the Chef de Cuisine for Tyler Florence at his flagship restaurant Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco.
Now 35 years old, Gurnee was born and raised in Sacramento and attributes his love of the culinary arts to holidays at his grandmother's house and assisting his mother in the kitchen. He also has a respect and empathy toward the farmer of today brought forth by his time spent raising animals with the 4-H Youth Development Program. All this has translated into "a passion for finding innovative ways to use quality ingredients and for the energy of the people who and places that comprise the restaurant industry."
He graduated with honors from the California Culinary Academy and began his career with stints at Jianna and Campton Place, two highly regarded chef-driven restaurants in San Francisco. He subsequently returned to his hometown of Sacramento to work with local culinary icon Kurt Spataro at Cafe Bernardo, Sammy Chu's and Paragary's before joining nationally acclaimed chef Philip Wang to help open the landmark fine-dining destination restaurant Mason’s where he then became the Executive Chef.
In 2010, Gurnee opened Sacramento's first gastro pub, Kupros Craft House, known for an innovative menu prepared with locally sourced ingredients, housemade charcuterie and unique microbrews.
Currently a resident of San Francisco, when not at work, Gurnee enjoys exploring the city of San Francisco and especially Golden Gate Park, and hunting waterfowl in the Sacramento Delta.
