Stanford Law School Dean Larry Kramer will step down from that post to head the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in Menlo Park on Sept.
1.
Kramer's appointment was announced by the foundation on Wednesday.
The organization, with assets of more than $7 billion, is one of the nation's largest grant-making foundations. It funds projects in the areas of education, the environment, global development and performing arts.

The foundation was formed in 1966 by William Hewlett, a co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Co.; his wife, Flora Hewlett; and their son, Walter Hewlett.
Kramer, 53, has been the law school's dean since 2004.The school said in a statement that Kramer increased opportunities for law students to take courses in other fields and expanded public service opportunities for students during his tenure.

"He pioneered a new vision of legal education," said Stanford University Acting President Provost John Etchemendy.
Kramer will replace Paul Brest, who is retiring as foundation president on Sept. 1. Brest took office in 2000.
