Mike Lanza Invites Families to Play Day

The Menlo Park resident wrote the book on building spaces to play outside.

Author Mike Lanza is inviting people to his house Sunday afternoon to talk about his new book Playborhood: Turn Your Neighborhood Into a Place for Play.

The Stanford grad says he’s worked very hard to make his own yard in Menlo Park a space in which his three boys will want to play. He traveled the country, researching ways to make his yard vibrant. In 2008, he applied this knowledge and revamped his home.

“I had been planning to remake my front yard into a “front yard family room,” to become a neighborhood hangout – a sort of outdoor suburban version of “Cheers,” Lanza wrote on his blog. He has since written his book about his endeavor and wants to share that.

He is inviting families to his home, which is located at 226 Yale Road, for two chats about how parents can turn their neighborhoods into playborhoods.

“The critical skills of increased self-reliance, social adaptation, leadership, and creativity are a direct result of what playing in their own neighborhoods can teach your children,” Lanza said.

Parents can chat with him, while the kids play in his front and back yards.  Lanza’s house features a playhouse, slides, and an inground trampoline.
