Menlo Park To Hold Diaper Derby In June

Menlo Park’s annual summer block party will feature a new event this year – a diaper derby.

On June 19 from 5-9 p.m., downtown Menlo Park, California will transform into a scene reminiscent of Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain.

Police will block vehicle traffic from cruising through downtown, allowing thousands of people to stroll leisurely down Santa Cruz Avenue and mingle with their neighbors. More than 6,000 people attended last year’s block party. This year's party will be the seventh annual party and is sponsored by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce, Patch, Cheeky Monkey Toys, Facebook, The City of Menlo Park’s Community Services Department, and other local businesses.

Live bands will be performing on the streets; restaurants will stay open late; and babies will speed towards a finish line, in the first ever Menlo Park Diaper Derby.

A diaper derby is a friendly competition between children who are young enough to be in diapers. 18 babies will race each other on the Facebook stage, which will be located at 814 Santa Cruz Avenue.

They can crawl forwards or backward, as some tend to do, toward the finish line.

The first baby to touch the finish line with any part of their body wins a round, and advances to the next level.  The winner of the last heat will win a gift certificate from Cheeky Monkey Toys and a trophy.

Raymond Mueller, Diaper Derby organizer, said spots in the race are still available. A full list of the Diaper Derby rules, along with the application for admission into the race can be found here.
