Spring Clean Up

Redwood City’s annual Spring Cleanup is SaturdayApril 30, brought to you by Redwood City’s Pride and Beautification Committee. You and your family are invited to join the fun as you help to beautify your community!

This year we’re featuring a cleanup of Redwood Creek (among other areas), with the generous assistance of the non-profit group Save The Bay. You might recall that last year Save the Bay asked Bay Area residents to vote for one of seven selected Bay Trash Hot Spots for them to “adopt” with a series of volunteer cleanups throughout 2011, and the winner was Redwood Creek. So, as part of the City’s Annual Spring Cleanup Day, the April 30 cleanup of Redwood Creek marks the second of four cleanups Save The Bay and its volunteers will provide throughout the year.

Spring Cleanup participants should meet at 8:30 am on Saturday, April 30 at the City’s Public Works Services Building, located at 1400 Broadway (near Broadway and Woodside Road). After a complimentary continental breakfast, volunteers will head out to the various cleanup areas – those volunteers wishing to focus on Redwood Creek will gather with Save The Bay team captains and then move out to sections of the creek needing particular attention. At noon, all volunteers will meet for a free Thank You BBQ lunch back at the Public Works building. RSVPs are not required, but individuals interested in volunteering for the Redwood Creek cleanup can sign up at www.saveSFbay.org/volunteer, and as always walk-ins are welcome on the day of the event!

This year, in addition to the concentration on Redwood Creek, Redwood City’s Annual Spring Cleanup Day focuses on sprucing up the areas around El Camino/Broadway, Jefferson/James, Little River Park, Union Cemetery, Woodside Road, and the Bay Front Canal.  The volunteer event offers an easy and fun project for kids and adults alike, and meets community service requirements for many schools. Further, with Earth Day on April 22, this cleanup effort provides an excellent opportunity to give something back to the planet.

Other Spring Cleanup sponsors include: San Mateo Credit Union, Recology, Sims Metal Management, Shinnyo-En, and Keep California Beautiful. Please call 650-780-7300 for more information about the Spring Cleanup.

On that same weekend, Recology San Mateo County is generously sponsoring the Great Compost Giveaway. From 9 am April 30 until 3 pm on May 1, Redwood City residents can come to the Public Works Services parking lot and load up with up to one cubic yard of free compost (equivalent to about three full garbage cans). A limited supply is available to be shared among Redwood City residents only, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Twice a year, Redwood City’s Pride and Beautification Committee holds these special volunteer cleanup days to focus efforts on beautifying a specific site or area, and to promote a year-round pride in Redwood City, by cleaning and beautifying school sites, the waterfront, parks, streets, and other areas. Visit www.redwoodcity.org/prideandbeautification for more info on this and other projects.
