Police Add Time To Parking Meters in Menlo Park

Will this encourage you to shop locally?

City officials are giving the gift of time this holiday season by increasing the amount of hours that shoppers can leave a car in a lot in downtown Menlo Park.

Most parking lots limit drivers to two hours; but as of Monday you can leave your car there for three.

The change in time restrictions is the result of partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Menlo Park Police Department; both entities hope this will promote shopping at local retailers.

The one lot that is an exception to this temporary rule is the one by Draeger's; the posted hours there will remain in effect.

Red zones, loading zones, and on-street parking rules will not change. These holiday parking hours will end on Monday January 7, 2013.

Time restrictions are not enforced on Saturdays or Sundays.

Parking meters? What parking meters?

There are two lots by Draeger's; the one across Menlo Ave and the other it shares with Peet's. Which one is not a part of the temporary time extension?
This should be permanent in the lots with shorter time restricted parking on the street. My shopping is done so it is not likely to change my habits. Good effort though ... keep it up.

As an employee on Santa Cruz Ave who pays about 600 a year in parking tickets ( the same price as a permit actually), I'm not impressed because they used to not check the parking at all for 2-3 weeks in december. 1 extra hour means nothing to me.

Amanda - those parking spaces are intended for small business customers, not workers; hence the 2-3 hour limit. Should you do your part and encourage business in that area by parking a little further away? Merry Christmas.

Sure Alan, I could do what others do and park blocks away in front of someone's house all day. The reason I opt not to do that is out of curtesy for the homeowners, I know I don't like it when someone parks in front of my house all day :) Plus let's face it, Menlo Park loves me parking in their lots. If I pay more than 600 dollars a year, they are making a nice profit off of me! I helped pay for the poorly designed lot " improvements" that have caused my car to be hit 3 times now because it's hard for people to pull into the slots.
