Library Re-Opening on Tuesday

People will now be able to check books in and out by themselves.

The Menlo Park Main Library will be opening at noon on Tuesday, June 19, a day later than , library staff announced Friday.

The Library has been closed for the past month, while staff installed more than 80,000 RFID tags into the book collection.  RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.

“RFID tags are widely used  in libraries and retail businesses for inventory and self service,” explained Library Director Susan Holmer.

“RFID technology will let us do more with less – improving efficiency, inventory control, and security,” Holmer said.

When the library opens, it will also have four new self-checkout stations where avid readers can check books in and out by themselves.  Holmer said that library staff will be available to help.  The new self check out station were installed to ease the burden on librarians, who processed about 750,000 book lending transactions last year.

“Automating routine transactions will mean more staff time is available for other kinds of more personal assistance, and will enable us to handle an increasing number of transactions,” Holmer said.
