Early Morning Water Main Break Affects Residents

The break was first reported about 3 a.m.

Crews have successfully shut off a water main in Menlo Park after a break in the line spilled water into the streets for nearly three hours this morning, according to Menlo Park police.

The pipe broke at around 3 a.m. today near the corner of Monte Rosa Drive and Sharon Park Drive, police said. Unconfirmed reports at the scene estimated 3,000 gallons per minute of water was surging out of the broken pipe.

Police initially estimated about 100-200 residents were left without water when the break first occurred.

Chip Taylor, Menlo Park Public Works director, says the task now is to shut down lines in the area and isolate what may have caused the break.

"There are some older water lines in this area," said Taylor. "So it could just be related to age and deterioration of the lines, but we don't know yet."

Taylor estimates the water lines in the area were laid sometime in the 1960's.

Water service is expected to resume for neighborhood residents sometime later this morning.
